Autumn is officially here and with that comes fun and festive activities. There are a wide variety of happenings for seniors to attend with family and friends. Studies show that the more active seniors are, the healthier they are in mind and body. Whether you’re out and about every day or are only able to manage a day or two per week, outings are fun and meaningful.
Since cooler temperatures abound now, it’s a great time to breathe some fresh air and not sweat it out during the blistering summer months. There are many activities for seniors to enjoy with caregivers, family and friends. Check out these life-enriching activities no matter where you live.

Pumpkin Decorating

Nothing screams fall more than pumpkins. Whether you decorate with pumpkins or enjoy the taste of pumpkin in a sweet treat, there’s no doubt of the seasonal sentiment brought by pumpkins. There are a wide array of pumpkin patches and vendors selling pumpkins. Pick a day and head out with family or friends for a day of pumpkin picking and decorating.
It’s a fun and young-at-heart activity transforming a pumpkins into a jack-o-lantern or having a festive fall activity. If there are seniors who cannot use a sharp knife due to medical concerns, it’s advised to have a caregiver or able adult to help with this part. Also, using a battery or LED candle instead of a real candle is a safer alternative to making the carved pumpkin light up.

Apple Picking

Hanging out at apple orchards has quickly become popular for fall seasons. This also makes a fun outing to do with grandchildren plus walking around the orchard offers great physical and mental rewards. In addition to taking home apples, many orchards offer tasty treats such as cider, pie and even pastries like doughnuts.
Every orchard is a bit different but they offer traditional fun. After all, an apple a day helps keep the doctor away. Check with the orchard ahead of time regarding any accommodations that may be needed.

Take a Walk

Going for a brisk walk with dear friends, family or grandchildren is stimulating and can be done anywhere. Whether it’s in a neighborhood park, inside a gymnasium or through the woods, this is one activity is low cost or even free depending on where one goes.
There’s nothing more stimulating that strolling in the crisp, cool air and perhaps seeing the changing foliage. If headed outside, make sure to dress accordingly for weather. If able and healthy, hiking is another great option. There are easy hikes and more advanced hikes depending on the ability of the people hiking.

More Fun This Fall

There are many more festivities for seniors to engage in and keep themselves healthy, wealthy and wise. Try a cornfield maze which is both a physical and mental exercise. Corn mazes have gained popularity and they range from beginner to advanced. These mazes are definitely a group activity and may not be suitable for people of limited mobility.
Speaking of mazes, farms offer a slew of fun in the fall. In addition to the obvious benefits of supporting the local farmer, there are tours, hayrides and sometimes petting zoos. Check out some close farms in your area!
